While many musical artists drop out of school to pursue their dream in the entertainment industry, believe it or not, there are some musicians and singers out there who worked hard to get their college degrees. We’ve got a list of those musicians who have an alma mater and a piece of paper to prove it. And yes you guessed right, Kanye West is not one of them.
So what musicians or artists have a college degree? I’ve put a few of my favorites together and if you have any to add, feel free to share in the comments section below.
Carrie Underwood (shown above): While she was on Idol, Underwood was just a few credits short of a degree from Oklahoma’s Northeastern State University. Despite winning the Idol crown, Carrie made sure to complete those final credits for a degree in mass communications. Her emphasis? Journalism. See a photo of Underwood receiving her diploma here.
John Legend (born John Stephens): Before he landed a record deal and became a famous R&B crooner, he attended the University of Pennsylvania and received a Bachelor’s degree in English. Most interesting about John is that he was offered scholarships to attend Harvard, Georgetown and Morehouse.
Kenny Chesney: It was back in 1990 that this country stud graduated from East Tennessee State University with a degree in advertising. He’s obviously a creative type but did you also know that he was also in a fraternity?
Damian Kulash: The OK Go front man graduated in 1998 from Brown University with a Bachelor’s degree in art semiotics.
Not too shabby!
MIA (born Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam): Ever since she was young, MIA was fascinated with art and she used it as her outlet for self expression. So it really doesn’t come as a surprise that the eccentric rapper received a degree in fine art, film and video. It was back in 1997 that she graduated from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design (London).
Greg Graffin (Lead singer of the group Bad Religion): If you follow Mr. Graffin on Twitter, you will notice his name as Doctor Graffin. Well, it’s true. Not only is he a musician, he has his Doctorate in zoology. Check out these credentials. Graffin has a Bachelor’s in anthropology and geology; a Master’s in geology AND that fabulous Doctorate.
Lisa Loeb: It’s always good to have a back up plan and Lisa has that degree to ‘fall back on’. She graduated with a degree from Brown University. His subject of choice? Comparative literature. Check out Loeb’s Stay video here.
Young MC: He may have written some pretty successful songs (i.e. Tone Loc’s Wild Thing and Funky Cold Medina, jams that I shook my booty to back in high school), but Mr. MC also has a degree under his belt. Back in 1989, MC graduated from University of Southern Cali with a degree in economics.
Rivers Cuomo (front man of Weezer): Rivers received his Bachelor’s degree in American literature back in 2006 from wait for it…Harvard. Yes, not only to being a brilliant hit-maker he is intelligent.
Do you know of any other celebrities that have degrees?
