I’m beginning to wonder if its even worth it to ask if people are shocked by this video, or anything else Lady Gaga does for that much, anymore. The world seems to be building up a little bit of Gaga tolerance.

Following in the footsteps of music video innovators like Michael Jackson and her personal influence Madonna, Lady Gaga’s music videos always seem to be more like little movies than music videos. And while the content of her videos usually have little to do with the context of the song, they are always very visually stimulating, well produced, and over-the-top. We really don’t expect anything less than that from her, though, do we?

But this time she has kept up with the “birth” theme she has been rolling with recently. At least after seeing this music video her Grammy performance seems to make a whole lot more sense!

The clip opens with narrative by Gaga herself telling the story of the cosmic birth of good and evil, complete with a very abstract and gooey birth scene. And just to make sure we knew we were watching a Gaga video, she threw some unicorns, lots of colors, and a machine gun in there just to be safe. No biggie.

From there, the video is pretty tame by Gaga standards. Not that she doesn’t usually show off her amazing body, but she is wearing a small bikini dancing around with her backup dancers in a fairly “normal” choreography sequence. She looks really natural and pretty, aside from those alien bones sticking out of her shoulders and face that she was so fond of at the Grammy Awards. Then comes the zombies.

The evil “twins” that she mentioned at the beginning of the video crop up, and we see Gaga in a suit and zombie makeup as she dances around a stoic zombie man. It’s actually pretty comical, considering they are supposed to be the birth of evil.

Then there’s some more dancing, birthing, lots of touching, groping, and crazy hair, and some more unicorns. And that about sums it up!

Whether you thought the video was insane, conservative for what we usually see from Lady Gaga, or you just aren’t surprised by anything she pulls out of that trick hat she has, I thought the video did a great job of getting her message across. She could have gone really crazy with the concept, but instead chose to keep simple (and again, this is pretty simple in Gaga standards!) to get the important message in the song heard more clearly.
