First her meteoric rise to global fame with Britain’s Got Talent. Now the Susan Boyle album has already set a record on Amazon.com for the most pre-orders in the online retailer’s history. Find out more about the highly anticipated debut, I Dreamed a Dream.
The internationally known singer continues to set records. Just as the video of her now iconic BGT audition became one of the most viewed viral videos in history, she has set another record. Her album has been at or near the top of the Amazon Bestsellers in Music chart, which is updated hourly, for months and those cumulative pre-orders have added up tremendously for the album which will be released on Nov. 23.
As ABC News notes, she has set a new record for international pre-orders on Amazon. Quoting Julian Monaghan, who is head of music buying for Amazon.co.uk:
“Just eight months ago, no one was aware of the talents of Susan Boyle…Now, she has generated more Amazon pre-order CD sales globally than any other artist. That is an incredible achievement and is testament to the fact that she has captured the hearts of people all over Britain, America and the rest of the world.”
A statement from Steve Barnett, chairman of Columbia Records echoes the same sentiments.
“One of the things that is so unique about Susan Boyle is her ability to touch people around the world.”
We’re excited that I Dreamed A Dream holds the new record for global pre-orders and that Amazon’s customers have supported her album in this way.”
As Reuters notes, the online retailer declined to give sales figures but did note pre-sales were highest of any album in its 14-year history, and that the singer’s debut album surpassed the record set in 2008 by “Supermarket Fantasy” the album by the Japanese rock band Mr. Children, as well as a previous record which U.S. singer-songwriter Norah Jones had set in 2007 with her album “Not Too Late” as well as a 2008 record set by the U.K. band Take That and their album “Never Forget: The Ultimate Collection.”
Throughout the summer for those fortunate to see her on the Britain’s Got Talent (all the videos are on YouTube for those who want to get caught up) she sang her signature songs: I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables and Memory from the musical Cats which she performed during the BGT competition which seems far in the past now, as does her surprising second-place finish.
These songs are among those on the album, along with the lead single, her haunting rendition of the Rolling Stones’ Wild Horses which you can hear via the video below. Additional songs include covers of Madonna’s You’ll See and the Monkee’s Daydream Believer as well as the American standard Cry Me a River, which was first heard during the summer when her performance from a charity CD from 1999 hit YouTube after being discovered by Scottish newspaper The Daily Record, and becoming another viral video.
With the Susan Boyle album release, we may find the globally famous singer setting even more new records.
