The BET Awards 2009 paid tribute to the singer’s brother, King of Pop Michael Jackson whose untimely death at age 50 on June 25, 2009 was just days before the annual awards ceremony.
Oscar winning actor and Grammy winning R&B singer Jamie Foxx, host of the live telecast, setthe tone at the start of the program: “”No need to be sad — we want to celebrate this black man. He belongs to us and we shared him with everybody else. … It didn’t make a difference what he looked like. It matters what he sounded like.”
After an evening featuring a number of performances covering the music of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, including a Jamie Foxx Moonwalk and a rendition of signature hits ABC, The Love You Save, and I Want You Back performed by New Edition, the emotionally shaken singer took to the stage, with host Foxx accompanying her. Dressed impeccably in white, face full of sadness and pain, the singer delivered her remarks.
The Janet Jackson BET Awards 2009 video reveals the singer telling the audience: “My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was just too painful. To you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts…Thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much.”

The father of Michael Jackson, Joe Jackson, was the only other family member present at the awards ceremony; he sat in the audience, and previously had walked the red carpet where he gave a brief interview saying “I don’t like what happened.” The video can be seen here. The Daily News quotes from his CNN interview in which he stated, regarding the tributes worldwide: “I wish the world had recognized him when he was living. I wish he was here to see all this.”
Prior performances at the 2009 BET Awards included a mixture of tribute performances and performances of artists’ own hits: Beyonce, Ne-Yo, Kanye West, Queen Latifah, and Keri Hilson, Maxwell, Fabolous, Soulja Boy, Keyshia Cole and Mary Mary among others, as the various performers and presenters and winners offered words about the legendary King of Pop and how he had inspired them.

Well I for one thought the BET Awards Show was a bust. I think they would have done a better job if they would have waited and did a true tribute. And what the hell was Joe Jackson doing there? His comments to CNN were not only inappropriate…but also self serving. He introduced his lawyer…then brought up his business partner and announced his record company as his sons dead body lays in a morgue. He certainly proved all the rumors to be true…what an asshole! The best performance and the best thing for me was the sexy, outstanding, and talented Maxwell. Now that was a performance! He still got it! And oh by the way…what the hell was Beyonce thinking…with her porn version of Ava Maria (I guess that’s the name of it) whatever it was she shouldn’t have.
Jamie Fox shame on you for announcing your tour date over and over…was this tribute to Michael Jackson or you. And why were you running around like you were on crack. I feel that you are very, very talented but your actions last night were just wrong. Get it together.
Lil Wayne and his crew with all of the profanity and the little tween girls on stage as you talk about your d—k come on people. BET shame on you. You have to know better. You have just earned one less fan.

I CRIED WHEN SHE WALKED OUT ON STAGE!!! 2 JUST KNOW AND SEE THE EMOTION SHE HAD IN AND ON HER FACE….MAKES YOU REALLY THINK 2 YOURSELF…MICHAEL WAS MORE THEN JUST AN ICON TO US…HE WAS HER BIG BROTHER..AND FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST A BROTHER, THAT MEANS MUCH MORE THE WORLD LOOKING AT HIM AS AN ICON!! I RESPECT HER FOR DOING THAT I WILL BE PRAYING FOR THERE FAMILY!!! HE WAS NORMAL JUST LIKE YOU AND I!

I think that janet and micheal look just alike and micheal brothers look like each other. I will and the whole world will misss Micheal. It’s sad for janet to lose a brother!!! R.I.P Micheal jackson!

I LOVE MICHEAL JACKSON… HIS MUSIC IS SO STRONG AND POWERFUL… IT’S LIKE YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND A MICHEAL JACKSON SONG TO TIE INTO YOUR EMOTIONS…. JANET IS A ROCK AND WILL BE THE ONE TO HOLD HER FAMILY UP WITH THE HELP OF HER MOTHER …. DEATH IS JUST A PART OF LIFE AND I WOULD RATHER HIM BE GONE AND WE MISS HIM THEN FOR HIM TO STILL BE HERE WITH US AND IN PAIN ….. You go gal Janet…I feel you deep. When someone loses a friend it is different from when you lose a brother. Michael Jackson was an Icon to many but to you a true Brother, despite his short-comings. Gal God is the giver and He comes to take his own. Take heart gal, there is a reason why he has gone now. All I can tell you is, be a mother to the Kids who have been left behind. They need you as their Auntie and especially the little girl. God bless you all and may He give you the strength to overcome the loss.
