Today he is the well-known and much celebrated season 8 runner up, and in a recent interview, acknowledging his music theater heritage. It is all the more fascinating to take a look back in time, as the Adam Lambert American Idol audition in San Francisco reveals him saying his parents put him in musical theater because he was hyperactive, made lots of noise and had way too much energy, and they needed to find an outlet for him.

The Adam Lambert Bohemian Rhapsody video shows him singing the signature song of legendary band Queen and its late great frontman Freddie Mercury, and impressing all of the judges…well, except Simon Cowell who expresses concerns that the singer is too “theatrical.” He finally concedes and agrees with fellow judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Kara DioGuardi that the singer can sing and so sends him off to Hollywood (where, in fact, he was already living and appearing in a stage play).

This spirited performance caused rumor and speculation which had already begun when days before the finale, news broke of the Queen + Paul Rogers partnership ending, (Rogers had been the band’s new frontman for the past four years) and with it questions about the possible future Adam Lambert might have with the band.

Queen guitarist Brian May separated the Adam Lambert Queen frontman rumor from fact when he told Rolling Stone:

“Amongst all that furor, there wasn’t really a quiet moment to talk…“But [drummer Roger Taylor] and I are definitely hoping to have a meaningful conversation with him at some point. It’s not like we, as Queen, would rush into coalescing with another singer just like that. It isn’t that easy. But I’d certainly like to work with Adam. That is one amazing instrument he has there.”

Nonetheless, speculation continues. As the journey from Adam Lambert Bohemian Rhapsody audition to American Idol runner up and beyond continues, so does the speculation on what is, no doubt, a bright future for the rising music star.
