On the season 8 American Idol finale, May 20, the 26-year-old David Cook, season 7 winner, will perform his new single, Permanent, from his platinum-selling self-titled debut album. The Permanent lyrics and music were written by David Cook along with Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida. The song is dedicated to his brother Adam Cook who died of brain cancer on May 2 at age 37.

Other confirmed performers for the star-studded American Idol finale are the Black Eyed Peas, Queen Latifah, Keith Urban, Lionel Richie, Carlos Santana and Cyndi Lauper. At the conclusion of the Wednesday night season finale, one of the American Idol Top 2, Kris Allen or Adam Lambert will be the season 8 American Idol winner.

According to the song’s aforementioned cowriter, Raine Maida, who is the lead singer of Our Lady Peace, the single which will be released on iTunes with proceeds going to charity.

“We recorded ‘Permanent’ in two takes and everyone in the room was crying,” Cook said on his website. “I actually had to leave at one point because it was so emotional.

This marks his second performance on American Idol season 8. Previously, David Cook performed ‘Come Back to Me’ and on that night, host Ryan Seacreast presented him the platinum plaque for his debut album which was certified platinum in the U.S. by the RIAA.

David Cook has been touring in support of his debut album. The David Cook tour is entitled the Declaration Tour 2009 and is the singer-songwriter’s first headlining tour. After taking a brief hiatus in early May after his brother’s death, he resumed the tour which will run throughout the summer.
