Here is the Kris Allen video. The American Idol season 8 finalist delivered a standout performance on Idol Top 3 May 12, 2009 program. See the video, lyrics and photos here.
It was American Idol Judges’ Choice and Finalists’ Choice Night May 12, 2009.
The 23-year-old Kris Allen from Conway, Arkansas where he leads worship at New Life Church and on the campus at University of Central Arkansas with Chi Alpha Campus Ministries. As one of the finalists, he has sometimes been overshadowed by other competitors; however, he delivered outstanding performances, particularly his second performance.
After he sang the One Republic hit Apologize, while accompanying himself on piano, Kris Allen’s song choice (which was chosen by judge Kara DioGuardi) became an issue.
Randy Jackson said, “This is the kind of artist you could be. Nice, very nice.”
Kara DioGuardi said she thought it was a “a confident performance,” but went on to say, “I wanted you to make it more your own. Take more chances.”
Paula Abdul said, “I miss you taking artistic license. There was a bum note there that was loud.”
It was Simon Cowell who addressed his comments more to fellow judge Kara DioGuardi than to Kris Allen, as he said, “Kara, you can’t choose a song for him and then blame him for doing the song!”
The singer’s own song choice was a winner for audience and judges a like. He was a standout with his performance of the Kanye West hit single Heartless; he accompanied himself on guitar and sang the song with much nuance and expression.
Randy Jackson said he liked Kris Allen’s version best. He said, “It was better than the original!”
Kara DioGuardi called the song choice and performance “bold, brave and fearless.”
Paula Abdul, alluding to the title said, ‘You sang a song about Simon Cowell. Bravo!’ She went on to praise the singer’s performance.
Simon Cowell said, “I had written you off after the poor song choice after first song, but that has all changed after that performance.”
Here is a recap of all of the performances on American Idol Top 3 May 12, 2009.

I’m a mother of two boys and a devout Christian, too. As TV viewer, I recognize that American Idol is a singing talent contest open to all. It is not supposed to be a popularity contest for class of persons in society. America’s vote for Kris, or America’s vote against Adam, seems to be a contemptuous hate vote against the various sectors of America that Adam appear to stand for. Among Season 8’s contenders, Adam Lambert was consistently the amazing artist and the best singer, gifted with a powerful voice. ADAM LAMBERT DESERVED TO WIN. Kris Allen himself knows this in his Christian heart, so much so that when he was unexpectedly handed the undeserved crown, he openly hesitated then asserted in public that “Adam deserves this…” — in righteous adherence to glaring truth and instinctive repudiation of the unbelievable, subsuming vote results. You could actually count many seconds before perplexed Kris finally acquiesced to received the crown, but only after Adam graciously approached him in encouragement. Adam Lambert is the true winner! What is wrong with America? Or what is wrong with this American Idol TV show?
