Among the numerous artists lending their time, money, and celebrity profiles to the relief effort in Haiti, Shakira is one that brings considerable experience in providing new hope for children in desperate circumstances.
In 2003, Shakira founded the Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation, named after her first album, alongside her parents William Mebarak and Nidia Rippol de Mebarak. The foundation provides” education and meals for poor Colombian children” who do not have access to such services and now has a non-profit sister foundation based in the U.S., called the Barefoot Foundation, supporting the cause globally. Since opening, the foundation has opened 6 schools in Columbia “serving disadvantaged children” and Shakira has taken her work to UNICEF as the youngest Goodwill Ambassador; as well as, being the Honorary Chair of the Global Campaign for Education.
